I read Gianni Rodari's The Grammar of Fantasy and I think it is one of the most beautiful books on writing, full of ideas and inspiration. There was a chapter on limericks , a kind of short five-line children's nursery rhyme. Limericks are made up of a verse that introduces the story, another that defines its quality, then two verses that explain the action, and finally the conclusion. The rhyme formula is: TO TO B B TO I had so much fun writing ten of them, that I propose to you, just to do a writing exercise on limericks, which I found funny. 1 There was a breeder from Rome who had no pack animals, and with a kilo of walnuts on the doorstep tried to open some shell, that feeder breeder from Rome.
A tone-deaf singer from Florence he made curtsies to all the women, but if someone asked him for a song he insulted her like a villain, that loud singer from Florence. 3 There was a writer from Special Data Ravenna who wrote a book without a pen, the pages were all blank like bank accounts, penniless writer from Ravenna. 4 The day Ravanello left the house and walked on the mowed grass he noticed that he felt better inside. Thus he hurried for a quick return, that lazy Radish locked in the house. 5 When the war broke out in China every woman became small to escape the American invaders who killed people like dogs, poor inhabitants of China. 6 The day the King left the throne thunder broke out in the already dark sky, the rain came down in sheets and flooded streets, farms and chapels, because of that King who no longer has a throne.
When Lady Cipolla dressed as a bride all the people came flocking to see her get married to Messer Aglio, who made a whole cut with a knife. And everyone then cried incessantly. 8 Once upon a time there was a guy from Poggibonsi who was a leather worker without any responses. To the whole country that was asking him for pieces he replied that he was in dire straits, that skinned leather worker from Poggibonsi. 9 One fine day a country cat he went to live in Romagna. But in the city among dangers and noises he really saw all the colors. And so he moved to the mountains. 10 There was a man named Daniel who wrote sentences in parallel rhymes. Every child who read them he laughed like a madman and laughed out loud for those geometric parallel rhymes.
